What Is Medicare Part A?
Medicare Part A covers inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facility care, hospice, and some home health care.
Part A may cover:
-
Hospital stays (semi-private room, meals, general nursing)
-
Skilled nursing facility care (after a qualifying hospital stay)
-
Hospice care for terminally ill patients
-
Limited home health services
Cost: Most people don’t pay a premium for Part A if they’ve worked at least 10 years and paid Medicare taxes. However, there may be deductibles and coinsurance.
What Is Medicare Part B?
Medicare Part B covers outpatient care, doctor visits, durable medical equipment, preventive services, and more.
Part B may cover:
-
Doctor visits and outpatient care
-
Preventive services (flu shots, cancer screenings, etc.)
-
Mental health services
-
Durable medical equipment (DME)
-
Lab tests and X-rays
Cost: Part B typically requires a monthly premium. In 2025, the standard premium is around $174.70/month (varies based on income). You’ll also pay an annual deductible and 20% coinsurance for most services.
Do You Need Both Part A and Part B?
Most people enroll in both Part A and Part B to ensure comprehensive coverage. Together, they form Original Medicare, which can be enhanced with a Medicare Supplement Plan (Medigap) or Medicare Advantage (Part C).
When Should You Enroll?
You can sign up for Medicare during your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP), which starts 3 months before you turn 65 and ends 3 months after your birthday month. Missing this window could result in late enrollment penalties.
